Stand Up is a picture book that tells the story of Xavier, a 3rd grader at Parker Elementary.
"My name is Xavier. I am a third grader at Parker Elementary and I hate school. I know what you are thinking, but Xavier, "hate" is a strong word. And I can't argue with that. It's not a word I use often, but where school is concerned, it's the only word that fits...."
And thus the journey of Xavier begins, as he navigates the playground, classrooms, and halls of Parker Elementary. "Stand Up" (32 pages, written by David Stefanich and illustrated by Corey Verdon) is a story that deals with a serious issue that often arises in schools.
Stand Up walks the difficult balance of letting readers step foot into Xavier's lonely world, while creating hope for a better tomorrow.
Corey's illustrations (http://coreyverdon.com/) work to further the journey of Xavier. While Corey's use of color, shading, and space immediately draw readers into Xavier's lonely world and have them hoping for Xavier to find his way.

Stand Up is a picture book that I wrote a little over a year ago. The idea behind the story came to me rather naturally as I work in education and am aware of some of the challenges students may face in school. The purpose of this book is to tell Xavier's story in a realistic way, while also allowing the reader to have to infer how Xavier's school experience might improve.
